Lawyer Kwame Jantuah has praised former President John Dramani Mahama for his proactive measures in addressing an impending ‘dumsor’ immediately after he was installed as the 6th president of the 4th Republic.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey monitored by MyNewsGH, Jantuah highlighted Mahama’s decisive response to the infamous “dumsor” crisis and its long-term impact on the energy sector.
“If President Mahama hadn’t gone through the ‘dumsor’ crisis, it would have been difficult for him to address the energy sector’s issues today,” Jantuah remarked. “But he immediately recognized the problem and put a team in place, which I think is a positive step.”
The “dumsor” crisis, characterized by erratic power outages, posed a significant challenge to the previous Mahama administration.
It disrupted businesses, strained households, and sparked public outcry. Jantuah explained that Mahama’s swift acknowledgement of the issue and his efforts to mitigate the crisis laid a foundation for ongoing reforms in the energy sector.
Reflecting on the persistent financial challenges within the sector, Jantuah noted, “The problem of the energy sector is related to finance and has always been a challenge for all governments.
“They haven’t really been able to handle the cash waterfall mechanism that brings revenue to the sector.”
The cash waterfall mechanism, designed to equitably distribute revenue among players in the energy value chain, remains a critical yet unresolved issue.
According to Jantuah, the lack of a sustainable financial framework has left successive administrations grappling with inefficiencies and debt.
