Investigate deaths recorded during 2020/24 elections—Mahama to IGP

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, PhD to commence an investigation into the deaths of some civilians during the 2020 and 2024 elections.

A letter signed by the executive secretary of the president said the deaths that occurred across the country have left a lasting scar on Ghana’s democracy.

Adding that justice must be served for families of victims.

The President in the letter proposed the establishment of an investigative task force, collaboration with witnesses and families, a review of electoral security arrangements, the use of forensic evidence, and collaboration of electoral and civic bodies to arrive at a solution.

The letter reminded the police of their periodic reports on the investigation to ensure transparency.

Some Ghanaians were reported to have died during the 2020 and 2024 elections across the country.

Some constituencies that recorded such casualties were Awutu Senya East, Techiman South, and Tolon, among others.

While in opposition, John Dramani Mahama promised the people of Ghana to open an investigation into the matter.

Although the Police Service has in the past hinted at investigating, they have since not provided an update on the progress of work.
