Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) John Dramani Mahama during his recent tour of the North East Region, screamed in shock on hearing the party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Walewale Constituency was contesting the seat for the 5th time.
At a rally in Tinguri to officially introduce Mr.Abdallah Abubakari to residents, Mr Mahama asked whether it was his third time attempting to win the seat that hitherto was an NDC stronghold.
He was heard asking “This is your third time eh?” but the former Northern Regional Minister in response said “It is my fifth time” and John Mahama in apparent shock shouted ‘Oyohoo”.
Before joining the NDC prior to the 2016 elections, Mr.Abdallah Abubakari, was the 2008 and 2012 Parliamentary Candidate for the People’s National Convention (PNC) in the Walewale constituency.
He subsequently after being made the Northern Regional Minister, contested the seat in 2016, and 2020 on the ticket of the NDC and is set to contest in 2024.
Walewale Constituency in Perspective
The Walewale Constituency which is one of the oldest constituencies in the newly created North East Region of Ghana has become a focal point for the two major political parties NPP and NDC respectively because the current Vice President and flagbearer of the NPP Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is an indigene of the area.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the seat four times [1992, 1996, 2004 and 2008]
The Peoples’ National Convention (PNC) won the seat once – that was in 2000 whilst the NPP won the seat thrice thus 2012, 2016 and 2020.
Upon its creation in 1992, Lawyer Ben Baluri Saibu became its first Parliamentarian for only a term and was succeeded by Madam Susana Adams for two terms.
Alhaji Issifu Azumah of the PNC won it in 2000 but lost to Alidu Iddrisu Zakari who also went for two terms but lost in the NDC Parliamentary Primaries in the run-up to the 2012 elections to King James Azortiba who was defeated at the polls by the incumbent Dr Sagre Bambangi on the ticket of the NPP.
In the 2012 Parliamentary elections, Dr Sagre had 19,328 votes to beat King James Azortiba of the NDC who had 15, 192 votes (Vote Difference 4,136).
In the 2016 Parliamentary elections, Dr Sagre Bambangi retained the seat for the NPP by obtaining 26,431 votes whilst Alhaji Abdallah Abubakari of the NDC got 23, 851 votes (Vote Difference 2,580)
Dr Sagre Bambangi was defeated in the Parliamentary Primaries prior to the 2020 polls paving the way for Hajia Lariba Abudu Zumwera then Deputy Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Northern Development Authority(NDA) to contest as the NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate in that polls.
At the close of polls, the NPP’s Hajia Lariba Abudu polled 32,294 votes representing 51.21% as against 30,615 votes representing 48.55% for NDC’s Alhaji Abdallah Abubakari. One Ibrahim Mubarak who contested and Independent Candidate polled 154 votes representing 0.24% of the total votes cast.
