Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has challenged NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to take a clear and consistent stance in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
“Today, he is saying that no, he doesn’t believe in jailing, that he’s against galamsey and will enforce the law. So once again, we have to ask Mr. JM, where do you stand?” Akufo-Addo questioned.
According to Akufo-Addo, Mahama has made conflicting statements on the issue, raising concerns about his commitment to tackling illegal mining.
“Every time you speak, you speak from one corner of your mouth, and you speak from another corner of your mouth. Let us hear from you directly—straight up. What do you stand for?” he said.
Akufo-Addo also noted that the NPP’s presidential candidate has publicly committed to a bipartisan pact to depoliticize galamsey and called on Mahama to do the same.
“The NPP presidential candidate has gone on record as saying he is prepared to sign a pact to take the galamsey issue out of our politics and address it on a nonpartisan basis.
We have yet to hear from the NDC presidential candidate. I am asking him to come out and support the idea of a political pact on galamsey,” he urged.
