Ghanaian politician and presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has run to Russian authorities for support ahead of the country’s crucial elections this year.
Under the cloak of launching a Russian version of his autobiography entitled ‘My First Coup D’étât’ which appears not to have doe well in Ghana, the former president has allegedly gone for funding to aid his campaign.
John Mahama paid glowing tribute to the Russian government while reiterating the tight and longstanding relations between Russia and the NDC as a political party.
“The NDC and Russia have been allies since our formation, your support for me and the NDC in the 2024 election will be a major boost for socialist movements across the globe” the former president appealed to Russian authorities.
While Mahama is in far away Moscow trying to convince Putin and his authorities to inject huge amounts of money into his comeback campaign, his opponent, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, are criss-crossing the entire country, campaigning ahead of the 2024 elections.
Many Ghanaians, especially those in Accra, have expressed disquiet about the former president’s trip to Moscow, sparking outrage amongst the youth of the relevance of such an alliance with Putin when the West is not happy with him for his war in Ukraine.
“Does it mean that if this man wins the elections, he will make Putin his friend, thereby jeopardizing our friendly relations with the US, Canada, UK, Germany and the other Western countries?. This is not good for Ghana. Why Russia?” a worried Ghanaian asked.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is poised to win the 2024 polls, has since begun the round two of his campaign.
This phase is targeting the various constituencies in the northern part of the country. He commenced his phase two campaign on Wednesday, 10th July, 2024, in the Nalerigu-Gambaga, Yunyoo and Bunkpurugu constituencies.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has also hit the grounds running with his campaign tour in the Western Region.
