The Minister-Designate in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye has hinted that the President intends to merge the Ghana News Agency and the Information Service Department.
He explains that the merger will help make the two organizations work efficiently, as they have lagged when it comes to technological advancement.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye made this known when he faced the Appointments committee in Parliament on Friday January 31, 2025.
“There are also other agencies like GNA, which, by virtue of its credibility and reliability in terms of news reportage, is widely accepted as one of the most important news outlets that the government has. The President has the vision at some point of merging this entity with ISD, rebranding it, and calling it a government communications office. They can deploy modern technology, and they can be in tune with the times.
In the past, if I wanted to issue a press statement, I needed to type it, print it out, roam the streets of Accra and elsewhere, and hand hard copies of the statement to the stations. A time came when you could do it via email, so you needed a tall list of emails and at a click of a button, you send it. But now one tweet or one post on Facebook reaches millions of people. That is even much faster than the program that we have.
What has become clear is that the approaches that have been adopted over the period are no longer fit for purpose. The ISD used to have cinema vans, but now if you show up with a cinema van, no one will show up. It means that things have to change and we need to keep to the pace at which technology is advancing. The President has the vision of transforming GNA by merging them into the Government Communications Office where they will be able to deliver much better services at a more efficient rate.
