Mahama blames NPP for Ghana’s economic crisis, calls it ‘Criminal Supervision’

Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asserted that the economic crisis currently facing Ghana is the result of what he described as “criminal supervision” by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

While addressing a crowd, Mahama emphasized that the country’s economic decline appeared to be a deliberate and coordinated effort by the current government.

He stated, “I believe that everything that has happened to this country is a result of criminal supervision aimed at destroying the economy. It seems well-planned. Just look at how President Nana Addo appointed his own cousin to oversee the Ministry of Finance.”

Mahama further criticized former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the government’s handling of the country’s loans. He claimed that much of Ghana’s debt was issued by the bank owned by Ofori-Atta and pointed out that these loans generated significant profits for both Ofori-Atta and his bank.

“Ofori-Atta would arrange loans for the country through his bank, Data Bank, and then collect the interest. That’s why he kept pushing for more loans,” Mahama alleged.

The country’s debt has been a growing concern. According to Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adams, Ghana’s debt has risen from GH¢658 billion in February 2024 to GH¢742 billion (US$50.9 billion), representing 70.6% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Of this total, GH¢452 billion is external debt, and GH¢290 billion is domestic debt. The government attributes this increase to the depreciation of the cedi and ongoing loan disbursements from creditors.
