Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, has unveiled a bold proposal to overhaul the country’s import duty system, aiming to ease the burdens faced by importers if he is elected.
Speaking at a special meeting with merchants and importers in Abossey Okai in the Greater Accra Region, a bustling hub known as Ghana’s largest automobile parts market, Dr. Bawumia highlighted his vision for a simplified and more predictable import duty structure.
During his address, Bawumia emphasized that under his proposed system, importers would pay a flat rate for all goods, regardless of the number of containers involved in the importation process.
This, he explained, would eliminate the complexities and fluctuating charges that often complicate business operations and lead to disputes with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
“I understand the challenges you face as importers. The current system has created unnecessary confusion and financial strain,” Bawumia told the crowd of merchants and traders. If given the opportunity, I will implement a flat rate for import duties that will apply to all goods, regardless of the number of containers. This will bring consistency, reduce conflicts with the GRA, and make it easier for businesses to operate.” He assured.
Bawumia’s proposal aims to streamline the importation process and foster a more business-friendly environment.
The NPP flagbearer added that his plan would not only ease the importation process, but also support local businesses by reducing overhead costs, allowing them to pass on the savings to consumers.
