Let’s stop tribalizing elections in Ghana – NAPO

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the vice-presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has called on Ghanaians to avoid framing elections along tribal lines.

Speaking to Umaru Sanda on Channel One TV monitored by MyNewsGH, he stressed the danger of promoting divisive narratives based on ethnic affiliations.

“Insulting tribes and people because you disagree with their voting patterns sets a dangerous precedent for this country,” he said, warning against the pitfalls of such rhetoric.

Addressing claims that the NDC’s voter base in the Volta Region is neglected, NAPO countered by urging citizens to focus on turnout rates and overall electoral performance rather than ethnic biases.

“Let us not tribalize these issues. Statements suggesting neglect of specific regions could lead us down a slippery slope,” he noted.

He added that Ghana’s elections reflect a broader national perspective, emphasizing that no single tribe or region determines outcomes.

He rejected allegations that his selection as the NPP running mate was meant to target votes from a particular ethnic group, describing such arguments as unfounded.

“My lineage may be significant to some, but the party did not choose me based on tribal affiliations,” he clarified.

NAPO urged citizens to engage in constructive discourse to strengthen the country’s democracy.
