Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Collins Owusu Amankwah did not hold back his thoughts during a recent appearance on Election Field on Oyerepa TV over attacks on former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Amankwah launched a scathing critique of Dela Edem, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), over remarks Edem made about former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
He expressed disappointment in Edem, whom he described as a close friend in his address. He highlighted how Edem had personally benefitted from policies implemented during Kufuor’s presidency, particularly the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Referring to Edem’s ongoing battle with hernia complications, Amankwah stated, “This is someone who directly relies on the NHIS—a policy crafted under Kufuor’s leadership. Yet he dares to criticize the very man responsible for it publicly. What level of ingratitude is this?”
The comments stemmed from Edem’s recent public criticism of Kufuor during a televised endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign.
Hon. Amankwah argued that Edem’s remarks were both disrespectful and uncalled for, especially given the contributions Kufuor had made to the nation.
For him, Edem’s actions exemplified a broader problem within the NDC, where members, according to the MP, enjoy the benefits of Kufuor’s policies while failing to acknowledge them.
When the program host urged Amankwah to retract his remarks about Edem’s medical history, the lawmaker stood his ground. “I won’t take it back,” he said firmly.
“The truth must be told. If Edem can boldly criticize a man who helped establish a system he now depends on, then he must be ready to face the facts. Gratitude is a virtue we should all embody, but instead, Edem has chosen to bite the hand that fed him.”
Amankwah’s frustration wasn’t limited to Edem alone. He accused other members of the NDC of staying silent on the issue, despite many of them also benefiting from Kufuor’s visionary policies.
“How many of them have come out to condemn Edem’s remarks? None. They sit back, enjoying the advantages of Kufuor’s policies while pretending he did nothing for this country. It’s disappointing and a disservice to our nation’s history,” he said passionately.
