Telecom giant MTN Ghana has once again brightened the holidays for new mothers across the country, delivering over 200 hampers to those who gave birth on Christmas Eve.
As part of its annual socio-sustainable interventions and corporate social responsibility efforts, the company through its Foundation distributed baby hampers filled with essential items such as diapers, towels, soaps, clothes, and more.
Mrs. Charity Darko, MTN’s Corporate Affairs Manager for the Northern Business District in the Ashanti Region, said that more than 600 hampers were distributed across 30 health facilities nationwide, with 17 of those facilities located in Northern Ghana.
She explained that the donations were aimed at easing the financial burden on new mothers by supplementing the baby items they purchase for delivery.
“There are some who really are in need of these items. As we were told, some are abandoned babies, while others are needy parents. So, these items come to cushion them. There are those who really need them. We also use this opportunity to show love to the people around us, especially to mothers who have just delivered. We see it as a social responsibility and a commitment to showing our care and love for the people around. We consider it as one of the flagship projects of MTN,” she said.
In the Ashanti Region, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Departments, the Maternity Wards and the Mother and Baby Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) recorded 22 deliveries on 25 and 26 December with no preterm nor stillbirths.
Their mothers were surprised with the arrival of the baby hampers from MTN officials on Thursday (26 December). The unexpected gesture brought great joy to the recipients.
“We weren’t expecting this kind gesture from MTN. When we heard of their arrival, we expected airtime and bundles from them. This is a huge surprise. We are much grateful,” one of the mothers shared.
Madam Gifty Serwaa Adu, Nurse Manager of the maternity ward at KATH, also expressed her gratitude for the donation. She, however, highlighted the ongoing challenges that many mothers face when it comes to healthcare costs.
“It is always exciting delivering babies on 25th December. We see them as being born with Christ. We delivered 10 babies on the 25th and 12 on the 26th of December. Our major problem is that there are a lot of mothers who can’t pay their medical bills. They have no partners to support them. Due to delivery complications, some bills exceed 20,000 to 40,000. Unfortunately, prolonged stays can increase their risk of infection,” she explained.
