iOS 18 introduces face ID App lock for enhanced security

Among the new features released with the latest iOS 18 update, one of the most requested by iPhone owners would be the capability to lock applications with Face ID.

This upgrade in security lets users hide personal data and sensitive apps without seeking third-party solutions, thus providing an integrated and seamless experience.

How face ID App lock works

iOS 18 brought full app locking by Face ID, meaning only the real owner will have access to it. Quite useful for applications where sensitive information is contained: banking, social networks, photo galleries, messaging. Once enabled in the settings, those selected applications open, requiring authentication via Face ID.

It can be enabled through the Settings app by following through to the Privacy & Security page and tapping App Lock, where a list of apps to lock using Face ID will appear.

Moreover, on the lock screen, a notification will blink, making the user informed that the app needs to be unlocked with Face ID for a seamless experience without disrupting workflows.

Supports all Face ID-Enabled Devices

It is available for all devices supporting Face ID-for example, the iPhone X and onwards. Users of older iPhones with Touch ID can also leverage fingerprint authentication to lock apps, providing this security enhancement to a wide range of iPhone owners.
