I will end ‘Kayayei’ by creating jobs for our women – Northern Regional Minister-designate

Ali Adolf, the Northern Regional Minister-designate, has outlined his plans to tackle the persistent issue of the ‘Kayayei’ phenomenon once confirmed in office.

During his vetting before the Appointments Committee in Parliament on Thursday, January 23, Ali Adolf acknowledged that the issue has been a longstanding challenge, largely attributed to the lack of employment opportunities in local communities in the Northern Region.

This scarcity of jobs drives young girls to migrate to Accra and other cities in search of work.

When asked about his approach to addressing the ‘Kayayei’ issue, Adolf explained that the solution lies in creating jobs and making the local environment more appealing to young people, especially women, so they no longer feel the need to leave their communities for work.

“This issue of Kayayei affects all of us,” Adolf stated.

“I want to bring them (Kayayei) back home, and I will do everything possible to make home attractive so they’ll return. We’ll provide jobs for the youth, and when they see that home is better than it was, they won’t hesitate to go back.”

Adolf further emphasized that these jobs would span across various sectors, including tailoring, hairdressing, farming, and other income-generating ventures.

He believes that these initiatives will create a sustainable and attractive environment for young girls, encouraging them to stay in their communities rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere.
