Honesty has taken center stage in national discourse following the commendable actions of Salifu Ibrahim, a sanitation worker in Tamale, who returned GHC 20,000 he discovered during his duties.
Hon. Matthew Nyindam, reflecting on the gesture in an interview on JoyNews monitored by MyNewsGH, praised Mr. Ibrahim’s integrity but offered thoughtful commentary on how society rewards such acts.
“I think he’s done very well, and I praise him for that,” Hon. Nyindam remarked. “Honesty is something we must all promote and instil, not only in the younger generation but even among older ones.”
While commending the recognition given to Mr. Ibrahim by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Hon. Nyindam expressed a nuanced view on the concept of rewarding honesty.
He emphasized that while it is important to acknowledge such actions, society should not create the expectation that honesty must always be met with material or monetary rewards.
“When someone is honest, it should come from within, not because they expect a physical or monetary gain. If we frame honesty as something transactional, it loses its essence,” he explained.
Hon. Nyindam advocated for a broader understanding of rewards, suggesting that blessings or the avoidance of calamities can also be seen as outcomes of honest behaviour.
“God bless you’ is enough. Honesty should be an attitude ingrained in us, not something done for the sake of what we might receive,” he added.
At the same time, Hon. Nyindam recognized the importance of encouraging good behaviour.
“Reward is important, but it doesn’t always have to be about money. A simple thank you or acknowledgement can inspire others to act with integrity,” he noted.
