The National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) ‘Preventive Promotive Approach’ to tackling noncommunicable diseases has garnered international attention, according to the authority’s CEO, Da Costa Aboagye.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Thursday (29 August), Aboagye explained that the strategy was developed following a review of the National Health Insurance Scheme’s (NHIS) cost burden, which identified diseases such as diabetes and hypertension as the primary drivers of expenditure.
“To reduce these noncommunicable diseases, you have to come up with a strategy. So we came up with a strategy called the ‘Preventive Promotive Approach,’” Aboagye said.
“The ‘Preventive Promotive Approach’ is when every Ghanaian is given the opportunity at least once in a year of birth to go to any health facility to check their vitals.”
The strategy has already attracted international interest, with the World Bank inviting Aboagye to present at various programmes.
The NHIA CEO also revealed that he met with the National Health Service (NHS) of England last week, which has expressed interest in investing in the initiative.
“It is this that has generated international attention. So you’ll see [the] World Bank inviting me for programmes to do presentations. As we speak, I met NHS England last week, and they have actually promised to invest in this.”
Aboagye described the approach as transformative for Ghana’s healthcare system, noting that it will not only enable early disease detection and increase life expectancy but also help the country achieve universal health coverage.
