Naseera Efua Quansah, the 2024 GNPC Ghana Fastest Human bronze medallist, is set to take her talents to the United States after signing with the University of Kentucky’s (UK) prestigious track and field programme.
Quansah, a student at Sammo Senior High School in the Central Region, has enjoyed a breakout year, showcasing her speed and determination on local and international stages.
The sprinter made headlines with her gold at the Cape Coast Meet of the GNPC Ghana Fastest Human.
She followed it up with her bronze-winning performance at the event’s grand finale, clocking an impressive 11.76 seconds in the 100m, cementing her status as one of Ghana’s rising sprint stars.
Her personal best of 11.55 seconds came at the CAA Region II Championships in June, where she breezed through the heats at the University of Ghana.
Despite narrowly missing a podium finish in the finals, Quansah’s fourth-place run was a testament to her growth and resilience.
She was also a key member of Ghana’s women’s 4x100m relay team, which clinched gold with a time of 43.73 seconds.
The young sprinter’s dominance extended beyond Ghana’s borders. At the 4-Nation Junior Athletics Championships in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, she dazzled by winning gold in the 100m (12.08 seconds), 200m (24.51 seconds), and the 4x100m relay (48.56 seconds).
Her efforts contributed to Ghana’s impressive haul of 19 medals at the U-20 championships.
Reflecting on her journey in a heartfelt Facebook post, Quansah revealed the challenges she overcame to make 2024 her standout year.
“My season was almost ruined,” she wrote, recounting how a lingering injury from 2023 worsened at the start of the year.
“To the glory of God, individuals and institutions, including Captain Asabea, Dr. Henrietta and [the] Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Physiotherapy Department, played various roles thence managing the situation to produce great performances.”
Quansah expressed gratitude to her coaches, the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), her family, and other key supporters, including medical professionals who helped her recover.
“Thank you, Cape Coast Optimistic Athletics Club, Ernest ‘Skuby’ Ofei-Brako, Akwasi Obeng Ebu, Ghana Athletics Association, Coach Micky, Sammo SHS, Sir Pato, Sir Salsa, Mr. Abokyi, Mr. Mills, mum and dad. I appreciate the various roles in making me a better person. Thank you all for your support, prayers, well wishes and contributions.”
By joining the University of Kentucky, Quansah becomes part of a programme renowned for nurturing world-class athletes.
Its alumni include Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a two-time Olympic gold medallist in the women’s 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay, as well as Alexis Holmes and Masai Russell, who struck gold at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Quansah’s next chapter at the University of Kentucky promises to be as electrifying as her journey so far, with opportunities to hone her craft alongside some of the world’s finest athletes.
For Ghana, her story adds another layer to the country’s growing reputation in athletics, and all eyes will be on her as she takes this bold step into the international arena.
