GFA dissolves Black Stars management committee

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has disbanded the management committee of the Black Stars following a woeful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign that saw the team finish bottom of their group without a single victory.

The decision was announced on Thursday (21 November), after an Executive Committee (ExCo) meeting on Wednesday (20 November), with the GFA also issuing a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians for the team’s failure to secure a spot at the continental showpiece for the first time since 2004.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wishes to express its sincerest apologies to the good people of Ghana for the Black Stars’ inability to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025,” the statement read. 

“We understand the disappointment and frustration this failure has caused, and we share in the pain and sadness of our beloved fans. We acknowledge that the team’s performance did not meet the high expectations of the nation, and for that, we are truly sorry.”

Despite the crushing disappointment, the GFA expressed gratitude to fans, acknowledging their unwavering support throughout the turbulent campaign.

In a bid to restore public confidence and chart a new path, the GFA dissolved the management committee responsible for overseeing the Black Stars. “We sincerely thank the members of the Committee for their service to Ghana football over the years,” the statement added.

Attention now turns to head coach Otto Addo, as the GFA plans a meeting with him on Wednesday (27 November) to review his technical report and assess the performance of the team since his appointment earlier this year.

Looking beyond immediate fixes, the GFA announced plans for a wide-ranging retreat to address systemic issues in Ghanaian football. 

The retreat, scheduled for Thursday (28 November) at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, aims to gather ideas from a diverse group of stakeholders.

Participants will include representatives from the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), the National Sports Authority (NSA), and the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), as well as former players, coaches, medics, marketers, and traditional rulers. 

Key government ministries, including Sports, Finance, and Education, alongside agencies like the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), will also be present.

The primary goal is to develop a comprehensive roadmap to revitalise not just the Black Stars but also Ghanaian football as a whole.
