The future of children living with their mothers and grandmothers at the Gambaga witches camp in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region hangs in the balance due to a severe lack of quality education.
The camp, which is home to 83 alleged witches and 33 dependents, is struggling to provide its young residents with the education they deserve.
The children, who were forced to flee their communities with their families, are now paying the price for the lack of access to quality education.
The camp’s custodians are sounding the alarm, warning that the children’s future is at risk unless urgent action is taken.
“We are worried about the future of these children,” said one of the custodians. “They are not receiving the education they need to succeed in life. We urge NGOs and the government to intervene and support us in providing these children with the quality education they deserve.”
The situation at the Gambaga witches camp highlights the need for greater investment in education and support for marginalised communities. As one of the custodians noted, “Education is the key to unlocking the potential of these children. We must act now to ensure they receive the education they need to build a brighter future.
Chief Kpana-raana, one of the custodians, in an interview with Asaase News at the camp, laments that “as they [the children] are here, they were brought here from their comfort zone to this place.
“You realise that they have a lot of dependents, dependents in which sense some have their grandchildren, some have their own children who are of school-going age and these children are their dependents and let us imagine if these children also do not get education. What happens to them? It is a serious problem that we are facing,” he complained.
Chief Kpana-raana stressed that “we have 33 dependents here who are of school-going age and they are not getting the right education. What becomes of them? I want to believe that it is lack of education and poverty that is bringing them here. If they are not educated, they don’t get the right education, and we will still continue to be harvesting witches from the ignorant or innocent communities. It is not our desire good for the future.
The custodians are appealing to the government and benevolent organisations to sponsor the education of the children who they say are not getting the right education.
“They eat and drink but their future education is our problem. We wish that if we could get [an] organisation that can come and support. One, uniform, other places we have fees to be paid [and] anything that is about education to sponsor their education for their future for them to be dependents on themselves,” Chief Kpana-raana appealed for support to be given to the children.
However, the North East Regional Coordinator for Culture, Chief Baba Sakpari Alhassan, also stressed that the alleged witches and their dependents at the camp deserve proper care and attention from NGOs and philanthropists to give a brighter future to the children by sponsoring their education.
