Timing of McDan Aviation terminal closure wrong, says CPA

Pressure group, Committee for Public Accountability (CPA) has strongly criticized the closure of the McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal, calling it a deliberate move by the government to disrupt the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected President John Dramani Mahama.

The CPA argues that the closure seems designed to prevent the arrival of international dignitaries traveling by private jets, thereby creating an impression of government interference.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) shut down the terminal over an alleged outstanding debt of more than $3 million, reportedly stemming from unpaid land leases, rentals, and terminal charges. McDan Aviation was given until Christmas to settle the debt, but the payments were not made, according to GACL.

However, McDan Aviation has denied the allegations of outstanding debt.

Speaking to the press on Thursday (2 January), Collins Amankwah, Executive Chairman of the CPA, condemned the closure as an act of self-interest by the government.

“How do you feel discomfort and discontent to see our fellow Ghanaian businesses flourishing? Why are we so wicked to each other? Why do we always want to undermine the very people that we’re supposed to support as people? What kind of people are we?”

He continued, “Because of this, you shut down the only private terminal which complements the main terminal. Now we have an important event like the swearing-in of the president-elect. And I’m sure they know, GACL knows that foreign diplomats are coming and most of them will come with private jets, where are they going to land? Why are we doing this to ourselves? Won’t people think that it’s a clear sabotage as far as the event is concerned?”
