Four Ghanaian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were injured on Tuesday (19 November) when a rocket struck their base, UNP 5-42, in the village of Ramyah near the Israeli border.
The attack, likely launched by non-state actors, is part of escalating tensions in the region.
The incident, one of three attacks on UN troops and facilities that day, caused significant damage to the base’s washroom and troop accommodations. The rocket, reportedly intended for an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) position, fell short and hit the Ghanaian battalion’s area.
UNIFIL confirmed that three of the injured soldiers were transported to a hospital in Tyre, while the fourth received on-site care. The severity of their injuries remains undisclosed.
The IDF, currently engaged in operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, attributed the rocket fire to the Lebanese armed group. Hezbollah has not issued any statements regarding the incident.
Broader escalation
The attack on the Ghanaian troops is part of a broader escalation in southern Lebanon.
The UNIFIL Sector West Headquarters in Shama was struck by five rockets the same day, causing extensive damage to a maintenance workshop but no casualties. This marks the second attack on the Shama base within a week, following an artillery shell strike on 15 November
Additionally, a UNIFIL patrol came under fire from an armed individual near the village of Khirbat Silim. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
UN condemnation
UNIFIL has launched investigations into these incidents, condemning the attacks as violations of international law and UN Resolution 1701. In a statement, the agency emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region despite these challenges.
The United Nations reiterated its call for all parties to respect the safety of peacekeepers, who are tasked with monitoring and reporting violations while maintaining their positions in the volatile border area.
