The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a shipment containing firearms and ammunition at the Tema Port.
A 40-foot container, numbered MEDU4496951 and shipped from the United States, held 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition concealed in suitcases.
Initially declared as a shipment of vehicles and personal effects, the cargo was flagged and seized on November 4, 2024, following thorough investigations by the GRA’s Intelligence and Preventive Units.
Commissioner of Customs, Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, confirmed the seizure, and indicated that “arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing to unravel the full details of the shipment and its intended recipients.”
He also issued a stern warning to individuals attempting to import ammunition without proper licenses, emphasizing that such acts are criminal and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The agent and consignees involved in the shipment have been arrested but were later granted bail as investigations continue.
The Customs Division has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and curbing the illegal importation of firearms and other contraband. Officials have assured the public that they are vigilant in preventing threats to the nation’s security.
