This week in sports brought major headlines from the global and Ghana’s own sporting scene. Here’s a roundup of the top stories you need to know.
FIFA reveals hosts for 2030 and 2034 World Cups
In a landmark decision, FIFA has confirmed Spain, Portugal, and Morocco as co-hosts for the 2030 Men’s World Cup, while Saudi Arabia will stage the 2034 edition.
The announcement came during the Extraordinary FIFA Congress on Wednesday (11 December), following a unanimous vote by member associations.
The 2030 tournament will also feature ceremonial opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, marking the centenary of the inaugural World Cup held in Uruguay in 1930.
Saudi Arabia’s selection for 2034 emphasises the Gulf nation’s growing investment in global sports, positioning itself as a major hub for international events.
SWAG calls on Mahama to prioritise sports funding
The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to allocate more resources to sports development when he assumes office in January 2025.
SWAG emphasised the need for increased funding and the establishment of robust policies to foster growth across various disciplines.
This comes as Ghana seeks to improve its global competitiveness in sports, particularly in the run-up to major international events.
Mahama, who secured a decisive victory in the 2024 general election with 56.55% of valid votes, is expected to unveil his vision for national development in the coming weeks.
Ghanaian swimmers falter at World Championships
Ghana’s campaign at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest ended in disappointment as Abeiku Jackson and Nubia Adjei failed to progress beyond the heats.
Jackson competed in the men’s 50m butterfly, while Adjei took on the women’s 50m and 100m backstroke.
Despite their valiant efforts, neither swimmer managed to secure a place in the top 16 during the heats on Tuesday (10 December) and Thursday (12 December).
The results highlight the need for enhanced training and investment in Ghanaian aquatic sports as the country aims to make a bigger splash on the global stage.
Cole Palmer smashes Yaya Touré’s penalty record
Chelsea starlet Cole Palmer has written his name into Premier League history, breaking Yaya Touré’s penalty record during Chelsea’s dramatic 4-3 comeback win over Tottenham on Sunday (9 December).
Touré’s record of 11 consecutive Premier League penalties had stood for nearly a decade, but Palmer’s cool-headed execution of two spot-kicks saw him extend the record to 12 without a single miss.
The 21-year-old continues to cement his place as one of the brightest young talents in English football, with pundits predicting a stellar future for the rising star.
Ghana Eagles brace for decisive rugby clash in Tunisia
The Ghana Eagles are set for a do-or-die showdown in Tunisia as they chase a ticket to the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup.
The national men’s rugby team will face Zambia, Nigeria, and hosts Tunisia in the 2024 Rugby Africa Repechage Pool A tournament from 18 to 22 December at the Stade Municipal de Jemmal.
With only one spot available in the repechage grand finale, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
The Pool A winner will battle Morocco, champions of Pool B, for a place in the continental showpiece.
