The chief crusader of the Crusaders Against Corruption, Emmanuel Wilson Jnr, has warned that any candidate hoping to win Ghana’s 2024 general election must make fighting corruption a top priority, as voters are likely to be heavily influenced by the issue.
In an interview on Asaase Radio’s Big Bulletin on Wednesday (14 August), Wilson Jnr asserted that the upcoming election will mirror the 2016 vote, where the outcome was significantly shaped by concerns over corruption.
“[Anyone] who wants to win this election but does not prioritise the fight against corruption, the person has lost from the beginning,” Wilson Jnr declared.
“We have empirical record to show that, particularly with 2016, election was won largely based on corruption and corruption-related matters, and it is going to repeat itself in 2024.”
He emphasised that corruption will be a central issue for voters in the December election, likely ranking among the top factors influencing their decisions.
He urged political leaders to demonstrate a strong commitment to combating corruption, adding, “It will be in the interest of any of these leaders to prioritise the fight against corruption; make sure that you are able to convince beyond every reasonable doubt that you are going to be committed to the fight against corruption.”
Wilson Jnr also revealed that his organisation will scrutinise the upcoming manifestos of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), focusing on their plans to tackle corruption.
“This coming Saturday, I’m looking forward to the NPP’s manifesto. God willing, next week Saturday, I also look forward to the NDC manifesto. Our interest will be in that chapter that talks about corruption; we are going to analyse this thoroughly and we will be able to advise the public as to which one we think is practicable and achievable. Corruption issues are key issues in determining who wins the 2024 December 7th election,” he stated.Asaase Broadcasting Company airs on Asaase 99.5 Accra, Asaase 98.5 Kumasi, Asaase 99.7 Tamale, Asaase 100.3 Cape Coast, AsaasePa 107.3 (Accra).
