Election unrest in Damongo: 14 ‘NDC boys’ released on bail; case adjourned to 23 January

A Kumasi High Court has granted bail to 14 male adults arrested in connection with violent disturbances that occurred during Election Day at Damongo in the Savannah Region.

The accused were initially remanded in custody on Thursday (12 December) after their first court appearance. The violence erupted due to delays in announcing election results, leading to the death of one individual and significant damage, including the burning of the Electoral Commission (EC) office by protesters.

To ensure security, the case was transferred from the Savannah Region to the Kumasi High Court, where the suspects face nine charges, including unlawful damage, assault, causing harm, and obstructing electoral officers.

In court on Thursday (19 December) State Attorney requested additional time to conclude investigations, while the defense counsel, Evans Amankwaah, appealed for bail, which the prosecution did not contest.

The court presided over by Her Lady Hannah Taylor subsequently granted bail of GHS 20,000 to each of the accused, with two sureties per individual. The court further ordered them to surrender their Ghana cards to the Registrar and report twice weekly to the Damongo District Police Command.

The case has been adjourned to 23 January 2025.

Meanwhile, Adams Mutawakilu, the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Damongo, has accused the EC of violating electoral laws in declaring Samuel Abu Jinapor as the MP-elect for the constituency. Mutawakilu has vowed to seek legal redress, emphasizing the need for justice.
