MFWA selects Asaase Radio’s Caleb Ahinakwah for DPI Journalism Fellowship

Caleb Ahinakwah, the award-winning journalist and host of Asaase Radio’s “Big Bulletin,” has been chosen as a Fellow for the second phase of the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Journalism Programme, organised by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and Co-Develop.

Fresh off being named Aquaculture Journalist of the Year by the Chamber of Aquaculture Ghana for 2024, Ahinakwah now joins an elite cohort of 44 journalists from four other West African nations.

The fellowship aims to equip participants with the expertise to craft impactful stories centred on digital public infrastructure (DPI) and digital public goods (DPGs)—critical topics in today’s rapidly digitising world.

Launched as part of a wider initiative by the MFWA and Co-Develop, the programme’s second edition is designed to boost public awareness and promote equitable access to information about DPGs.

It seeks to drive the adoption of inclusive and safe DPI systems across West Africa, ensuring they benefit all citizens.

The fellowship, which commenced on Wednesday (6 November), is set to run until 31 January 2025, with additional activities scheduled through April 2025.

Participants will undergo intensive training sessions on DPI/DPGs, receive editorial guidance, and leverage insights from experts to produce deeply researched and engaging reports for their media outlets.

Central to the programme is a specialised DPI/DPGs online platform, where Fellows can access resources, share knowledge, and showcase their investigative stories on digital infrastructure developments across the continent.

This portal also fosters connections within a vibrant network of past and current Fellows dedicated to reporting on digital innovation.

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of US$250 for the initial three months, enabling them to fully immerse themselves in the programme.

Additionally, their newsrooms will benefit from a US$1,000 DPI/DPGs Newsroom Partnership grant to bolster editorial production on related topics.

In a further bid to encourage quality reporting, Fellows can apply for DPI/DPGs Reporting Grants to support their work throughout the fellowship.

Top performers may even secure travel grants to attend international training sessions or conferences, expanding their expertise beyond the continent.

The fellowship also sets high expectations: each participant is required to produce at least two reports on DPI/DPGs per month and deliver at least three compelling stories by the programme’s end.

These stories will be featured by the Fellows’ respective media houses, contributing to the broader narrative of digital infrastructure’s role in societal progress.

Those who successfully complete the fellowship will be honoured with a Certificate of Honour, marking their commitment to advancing digital literacy and impactful journalism in the region.
