EC to NDC: Physical exhibition of voters’ register impractical

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it is not opposed to holding another physical exhibition of the corrected provisional voters’ register (PVR) at over 40,000 centres.

The EC, however emphasised that the three to four weeks required for printing and distribution make this impractical, especially with limited time left before the general election.

This response follows the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s demand for a forensic audit of the voter’s register and a re-exhibition of the 2024 voters’ register due to discrepancies found during the recent exhibition exercise, including instances of illegal voter transfers.

The EC’s investigation confirmed that 38 illegal transfers occurred in Pusiga in the Upper East Region, where an official’s credentials were misused. The NDC on 17 September staged a nationwide demonstration in protest of the Commission’s refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the register.

Responding to the opposition party’s demands the EC says it intends “to implement an online exhibition of the PVR at no cost to registered voters. Voters will be able to report anomalies in their details within a time frame that will be made available to the public. The voter’s register will be displayed online until Election Day.”

The Commission assured the NDC and the public that most discrepancies identified in the PVR had been resolved, as was successfully done in 2020, and will be similarly addressed for the 2024 elections.

“As a Commission, we are of the view that the existing legal and administrative processes for cleaning the PVR have not been fully exhausted to justify the call for a forensic audit. We entreat the NDC and the general public to trust us to deliver our mandate”, the election management body assured.
