Bribery Allegation: Barker-Vomawor apologizes to Appointments Committee

Social activist and legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has issued a formal apology to the Appointments Committee of Parliament for a post he made on social media, which members of the committee interpreted as an attack on their reputation.

In his apology, Barker-Vormawor clarified that his post was never meant to tarnish the committee’s image or accuse its members of engaging in corrupt practices.

He addressed the committee on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, saying, “Mr. Chairman, I am saying here clearly that my post was not intended to disparage members of the committee and I have not intended to say that members of this committee have received or demanded bribes from various individuals. At no point was my statement intended to communicate same and for those reasons, I apologise.”

Barker-Vormawor further committed to pulling down the post in question, emphasizing his willingness to resolve the matter.

Earlier, Barker-Vormawor’s legal counsel, Nana Ato Dadzie, had explained that the claim made by his client was not directed at the Appointments Committee.

Appearing before the committee, Dadzie described the allegations as an “act of whistleblowing,” meant to expose matters Barker-Vormawor had been made aware of regarding alleged bribery involving certain members of the committee.

“It was completely not directed at the Appointments Committee. It was only intended to expose certain matters that had come to his notice which alleged some people were apparently on the banner of the Appointments Committee, doing other acts,” Dadzie stated.

Barker-Vormawor’s apology and the clarification of his intentions come after the post sparked controversy and raised questions about the integrity of the Appointments Committee.
