Bono Region: One person arrested following deadly riot in Nkonsia

A young man has been apprehended by the chief and residents of Nkonsia and handed over to the Wenchi Police for his involvement in a riot that led to the death of one individual and the destruction of five motorbikes.

Several others were injured in the incident.

The Nkonsia Traditional Area, led by chief Nana Adu Poku Asuma IV, has subsequently banned all nightclubbing within the community.

This decision comes in the wake of the violent clash between youth from the Zongo community in Wenchi and Nkonsia on Saturday, 17 August 2024, which resulted in the death of 21-year-old Alhassan Mohammed.

During a meeting held at the Nkonsia chief’s palace on Tuesday, 20 August 2024, Chief Nana Adu Poku Asuma IV and his elders condemned the actions of the youth involved in the riot. They also expressed their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, Alhassan Mohammed, for their loss.

Nana Opoku Asuma stated, “We will fully support the police in their investigation to uncover the truth. As part of our efforts, we arrested one male suspect allegedly involved in the accident and have handed him over to the police.

We are committed to assisting in any further investigations to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.”

Tangba Kuyab, the Assembly Member for the area, commended the Chief and elders of Nkonsia for their prompt action in restoring peace and order. He also lauded the efforts of the Wenchi security agencies in maintaining law and order in Nkonsia.

Kuyab further appealed to the Wenchi Police Command to strengthen security in the area to ensure justice and sustain peace.

He pledged his unwavering support to the Chief and elders in their efforts to apprehend and hand over all those involved in the violent incident.

Tayub added, “Our role is not to condone crime. We are here to collaborate with the police to thoroughly investigate these incidents and ensure that those responsible are held accountable and face the law.”
