Ghana is intensifying efforts to eradicate malaria by expanding the rollout of the RTS, S/AS01 malaria vaccine to an additional 43 districts.
This marks the third phase of the vaccine’s national implementation, following its successful introduction in 93 districts since 2019.
The RTS, S/AS01 vaccine, which is also being used in Kenya and Malawi, has been a vital tool in the fight against malaria.
Since its rollout began, Ghana has vaccinated over one million children, significantly reducing severe malaria cases.
The latest expansion, which commenced on Wednesday (25 September), is expected to benefit over 100,000 children across these new districts, demonstrating the government’s continued commitment to improving child health.
The final phase, covering the remaining 125 districts, is scheduled between 2025 and 2029. UNICEF Ghana, in partnership with the Ghanaian government, aims to extend the reach of this life-saving intervention, safeguarding even more children from the devastating impact of malaria.
The RTS, S/AS01 vaccine has proven effective in reducing malaria-related deaths and severe illness.
Alongside this, Ghana will also become one of the first countries to implement the R21 malaria vaccine, a new option recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for use in high-transmission areas.
UNICEF Ghana attributes the success of these efforts to the generous support of partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, WHO, and the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH).
Together, these organisations are playing a crucial role in advancing Ghana’s fight against malaria and improving the health outcomes of its youngest citizens.
