Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore in the Ashanti Region, has taken legal action against TV3 and Onua TV, accusing them of misrepresenting his statements made on a campaign platform.

In his letter to the National Media Commission (NMC), the lawmaker stated that during an event held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi on 26 September, he spoke about both small-scale (community) mining and illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

He averred that he sought to distinguish between legal small-scale mining, which is done responsibly and under the law, and illegal mining, which has caused significant damage to Ghanaian water bodies and the environment.

Dr Afriye through his solicitors however accuses TV3 and Onua TV of editing his statements in a way that caused “public disaffection and hatred” towards him, aiming to “tarnish Hon. Dr Nana Ayew Afriye’s hard-won reputation as a medical doctor, politician, and Member of Parliament.”

It further describes the actions of the media outlets as “extremely unethical and unprofessional.”

The solicitors have requested that the NMC intervenes and instruct the media houses to retract the false publications and issue a public apology to avoid further legal consequences.

“We are by this letter requesting that your Commission shall cause the said stations to retract the said offensive publications through the same medium and to render the necessary apologies to forestall any further legal action from our esteemed client on this matter,” the letter stated.

The letter emphasised that it is improper for TV3 and Onua TV to “publish such misrepresentation and falsehood without any verification of its veracity.” The legal representatives also included a recording of Dr. Afriye’s original speech to support their claims.
