Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has refuted suggestions that the ruling party is weak in Parliament, stressing that aggressive posturing does not equate to strength.
He maintained that the majority side was deliberate in its approach during the vetting and approval of ministerial nominees in an interview on GTV with Kafui Dey.
“Being bullish is not strength. Strength is when you get your policy through and implemented the way you want it. We didn’t block the minority from expressing their views, but at the end of the day, our agenda was achieved,” Ayariga explained.
He pointed out that while the ruling party could have used its numbers to prevent vetting, they chose not to. “We wanted the process to be transparent.
“The minority was very vocal, and the chairman of the committee entertained them, but that’s part of democracy. You don’t kill your country’s democratic credentials by appearing intolerant,” he added.
On concerns about misconduct in Parliament, Ayariga acknowledged that discipline was needed. “When the Speaker suspends whips, you know there is a problem. But we are committed to instilling discipline. Many of the new MPs are still learning parliamentary rules and conduct,” he noted.
Discussing Parliament’s dress code, he mentioned that while formal attire is generally required, Fridays allow for a more relaxed dress style. “If you wear jeans or a T-shirt, your colleagues will heckle you. This is an important institution, and you must dress accordingly,” he said.
Ayariga concluded by reassuring party supporters that the majority remains in control. “Our goal was to get our nominees approved, and we did that. We are not weak; we are strategic,” he emphasized.
