Black Sharks secure advantage in Beach Soccer AFCON qualifier

Ghana’s Black Sharks have taken a significant step towards qualifying for the 2024 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a thrilling 5-3 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in the first leg of their qualifier.

The match played at the Emancipation Beach Arena in Keta on Sunday (21 July), saw the home side dominate large swathes of the game.

Alfred Kwame Torsu opened the scoring in the sixth minute, before Wise Nyamadi’s double extended Ghana’s lead. Côte d’Ivoire pulled one back before the end of the first period.

The second period was a more evenly contested affair, with Ghana unable to capitalise on their chances.

However, the Black Sharks found their rhythm again in the final period, with Ticor Kini scoring twice to put the game beyond doubt.

Côte d’Ivoire managed to net two late consolation goals but it was too little, too late.

Despite the commanding lead, Ghana’s head coach, Daniel Neequaye Kotey, is urging caution ahead of the second leg in Abidjan next Saturday (27 July).

“We have to stay focused and disciplined,” he said. “The job isn’t done yet. We need to replicate our performance next weekend and stay focused as a team.”

With a two-goal advantage, the Black Sharks are in a strong position to book their place at the tournament in Egypt.
