Honourable Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has addressed growing criticisms surrounding the integrity of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi.
The criticisms have stemmed from concerns over unfulfilled promises Dr. Bawumia made before assuming office, particularly related to economic improvement and governance.
When asked about these allegations of dishonesty, Mr. Bonsu firmly defended Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing that the Vice President should not bear the brunt of the shortcomings associated with the administration of President Akufo-Addo.
“It’s unfair to hold Dr. Bawumia solely responsible for the challenges we’ve faced,” Mr. Bonsu stated. “There were unprecedented circumstances that affected us, including the global pandemic and the international conflicts that shook economies around the world.”
Mr. Bonsu further elaborated on the specific challenges that hindered the government’s ability to implement many of its key policies, notably the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global supply chains and slowed down economic activities.
“The pandemic changed everything,” he explained. “Like many other countries, we were forced to shift our priorities, which impacted the pace of development projects we had set in motion.”
The Majority Leader also addressed the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which, according to him, has had a severe indirect effect on Ghana’s economy.
“People criticize us for using the war as an excuse, but the reality is that the conflict has disrupted key supplies, particularly iron rods, a vital material we import from Ukraine,” Mr. Bonsu pointed out. “This disruption has led to a rise in prices, contributing to inflation and affecting construction and other industries.”
Despite these setbacks, Mr. Bonsu expressed unwavering confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s capacity to fulfill his promises moving forward.
He highlighted that the Vice President, now poised to take on more responsibilities as the NPP’s presidential candidate, has grown into an independent leader capable of realizing his vision for Ghana. “Dr. Bawumia is not bound by the same limitations as before,” Mr. Bonsu affirmed. “He has the skills and the freedom to deliver on his commitments. I have full faith in his credibility.”
