Ashanti Region: Taxi driver shot dead by suspected gunmen; residents outraged over police negligence

A 37-year-old taxi driver, Amos Adusei, was shot dead by suspected robbers on the Ahenkro-Kwaman road in the Afigya Kwabre North district of the Ashanti Region.

The tragic incident occurred around 10:30pm on Saturday (6 July), according to the bereaved family.

The deceased

Hon. Isaac Adusei, the Assembly Member for the Ahenkro electoral area and brother of the deceased narrated the shocking details to Asaase News and said he rushed to the scene following a distress call.

“Around 11:15pm., I received multiple calls about an accident around Kwamang road, but it turned out that suspected robbers had taken over the road and shot my brother dead. I gathered company and rushed to the scene. We found the car had somersaulted, with my brother lying prone outside the vehicle with gunshot wounds around his chest”, Adusei narrated.

“I inquired if any police officer was present, and I was told that only one officer was there. He claimed there was no petrol in their patrol vehicle. Family members had to transport the body to the morgue themselves”, he revealed.

Assemblyman and brother of the deceased

The incident has sparked outrage among local taxi drivers, who voiced their concerns about the frequent robberies on the Ahenkro-Boaman road and the lack of police presence.

One driver remarked, “The robbers always come on this stretch and attack us, even though there are police officers in this district. They are neglecting their duties, allowing robberies to occur when they are not patrolling.”

The taxicab has since been towed to the police station for investigations. Authorities are yet to comment on this latest development.
