Ashanti Region: Mahama’s visit turns chaotic as NDC supporters clash with Muntaka Mubarak

Former President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the Wangara chief in the Ashanti Region on Monday (11 November) turned chaotic when supporters allegedly confronted Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak.

Mahama, who was visiting to pay his respects to the Wangara chief and the Zongo communities, witnessed tensions escalate as some supporters blocked the MP, a member of his delegation, from entering the palace.

Senior party members, including former Ashanti Regional Police Commander (COP) (Rtd) Kofi Boakye, quickly intervened to defuse the situation. The near scuffle has been captured and widely shared online.

The opposition party has since condemned the incident, calling it a serious affront to democratic values and unity within the party.

In a statement issued on Tuesday (12 November), the communications director of the NDC in the Asawase Constituency named Sarki Don Jazzi, a self-proclaimed national executive member of the party and one Aboabo Rasta of fueling the attack.

“The NDC Asawase Constituency unequivocally condemns this disgraceful behaviour as it undermines not only party cohesion but also societal norms of respect and civility.”

“Furthermore, we assert that these acts will not go unpunished; both Asiri Don Jazzy and Aboabo Rasta are warned that their presence at any NDC event in Asawase will be met with fierce resistance… In light of these developments, we want the Ghana Police Service to conduct an immediate investigation into this incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable under the law”, the statement further added.
