Political analyst Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has described Alan Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change and Alliance for Revolutionary Change, as the biggest loser in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Tuesday (10 December), Zaato likened Kyerematen’s trajectory to that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, who, despite significant promise, struggled to gain voter approval when it mattered most.
“The biggest loser in this election is Alan Kyerematen,” Zaato declared.
Kyerematen, once a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), broke away after losing the party’s primaries to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
Zaato noted that despite his status as one of Ghana’s most marketed political figures over the last two decades, Kyerematen failed to translate his prominence into electoral success.
“He’s one of the most marketed individuals in this country. For the last 20 years in Ghana, if you take from 2000 when H.E. J.A. Kufuor came to power to now few politicians, if you take H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo [and] Dr. [Mahamudu] Bawumia, it is also Alan Kyeremanten; these are the people who have been marketed beyond every reasonable.” Zaato explained.
Zaato argued that Kyerematen’s decision to run independently in the 2024 elections was meant to position him as a formidable contender and a decisive factor in Ghanaian politics. Instead, it exposed his vulnerabilities.
“In the NPP primaries, he was supposed to be the main challenger; it didn’t happen. He was deflated,” Zaato stated.
“He took his case directly to the voters, hoping that the voters would vindicate him, hoping that the voters would put him back on that pedestal where he will become the biggest prize in the market where everybody will now be eyeing him.”
The political analyst suggested that Kyerematen’s failure to make a significant impact in the general election leaves his political future in limbo.
Zaato contrasted his performance with that of other minor candidates, pointing out that Kyerematen didn’t even lead among the newcomers, securing 0.28% of the total votes cast, placing him in fourth place.
“It was ‘Cheddar’ (Nana Kwame Bediako), the other guy who has never been marketed, who rather led that track. So for you (Kyeremanten), it’s finished,” Zaato said.
“Your choices are [to] go back to NPP; they will never take you back because of the betrayal or stay with your butterfly.”
Zaato drew parallels between Kyerematen and Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a long-time NDC figure who also carried high expectations but struggled to leave a significant mark in electoral politics.
“Alan has become or is becoming the Spio-Garbrah of the NDC—well-marketed, thought to have so much hope but when he faced the electorate, they humbled him,” Zaato remarked. “Except in the case of Spio-Garbrah, he didn’t break away.”
Kyerematen’s political journey, once filled with hope and ambition, now faces an uncertain future. Whether he can redefine his legacy or fade into political obscurity remains to be seen.
