AFCON 2025 Qualifier: Black Stars stunned by late Niger equaliser

Ghana’s Black Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Niger in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Monday (9 September) at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, Morocco.

The Black Stars started brightly, with Iñaki Williams connecting to a cross from Abdul Fatawu in the opening minute. 

However, his header posed little threat to Niger’s goalkeeper, Abiboulaye Hainikoye, who comfortably gathered the attempt.

Despite Ghana dominating possession, they struggled to unlock Niger’s defence and were repeatedly exposed on the counterattack. 

Niger threatened early on, with Boubacar Haïnikoye and Daniel Sosah both coming close in the 15th and 17th minutes, while Yusif Moussa’s 20th-minute strike from outside the box sailed wide.

Niger’s missed opportunities allowed Ghana to regain control, and just before halftime, left-back Alidu Seidu fired a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box to give the Black Stars a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw much of the same pattern, with Ghana maintaining possession and Niger content to counter. It wasn’t until the 81st minute that Niger equalised, as Oumar Sako headed in from a Moussa Moudou corner.

In the dying moments, Niger nearly snatched a late winner when Boubacar Goumey’s header struck the post from an Alhabib Hassane cross, leaving Ghana relieved to escape with a point.
