The Minister for Finance Mohammed Amin Adam has said discussions with labour unions are in good faith and transparent, adding that government will not deviate from the fiscal path.
Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday(26 July), Amin Adam said, “I do know that the discussion with labour is in good faith and they also understand the economic situation that we find ourselves in.”
He said, “… We do not have to deviate from the fiscal path. We want to contain the deficit and primary balance which is the anchor of the programme we signed with the International Monetary Fund. I mean these are labour leaders who are very reasonable and they understand the situation, and so I’m confident that we will go through these [negotiations] with the kind of budget we have.”
Last week, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) withdrew all services with immediate effect as its ongoing strike intensified.
The decision was in response to the directive by the Education Minister to Principals and the Controller and Accountant General not to validate the July 2024 salaries of the teaching staff of 46 colleges of education who are still on strike.
CETAG had earlier vowed to intensify its indefinite strike until the government implemented the arbitral award and negotiated service conditions.
The teacher union insists its strike is legal and has accused the National Labour Commission (NLC) of spreading false information about its actions. The association also denied claims that its members had received arrears for the Book and Research Allowance for the 2022/2023 academic year.
