The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Yendi Constituency has formally informed Hon. Hussein Abdul-Karim, affectionately known as Lanburns, of the forfeiture of his party membership.
This decision comes after Abdul-Karim publicly declared his intention to run as an Independent Parliamentary candidate in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections, a move that has significant implications for his political career.
The NPP’s decision is rooted in Article 3(9)(1) of its constitution, which clearly states that any party member who stands as an independent candidate or supports another political party while the NPP has an official candidate automatically loses their membership. This constitutional provision is designed to maintain party unity and integrity, ensuring that all members rally behind the candidates chosen by the party.

“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party, Yendi constituency duly writes to notify Hon. Hussein Abdul-Karim (Lanburns), an Independent Parliamentary Candidate for 2024 Elections of his forfeiture of his membership of the party as stated in the relevant provisions of the party’s constitution.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 3(5) (A) of the NPP Constitution enjoins all members of the party to “abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the party”.
In addition, Article 3(9) (1) of the NPP party constitution provides as follows; “A Member of the Party, who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the party or who joins or declares his/her support for another Political Party or for an independent candidate, when the Party has sponsored a candidate in a general or by-election, automatically forfeits his or her membership of the party”.
“In line with these constitutional provisions, the leadership of the party is duty bound to inform you, Hon. Hussein Abdul Karim (Lanburns) that you are no longer a member of the party and for that matter you have AUTOMATICALLY FORFEITED your membership of the New Patriotic Party and henceforth can no longer claim to be a member of the Party for the obvious reason that you have declared your intention and subsequently filed your nomination at Electoral Commission as an independent Parliamentary candidate for 2024 elections in Yendi constituency.
“The Party leadership therefore appeal to you to read copiously the relevant provisions of the NPP party’s constitution as stated that debarred you from still holding yourself as a member of the Party.
“The leadership of the party admonishes you to campaign on your own merit as an independent parliamentary candidate and not to ride on the back of NPP to campaign for votes since you are no longer a bonafide member of the party.
