We Will Swoop on Wontumi Like a Hawk Picks a Hen – Mustapha Gbande Vows

The Deputy National Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has issued a call to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to come forward and assist in his immediate arrest.

Mr. Gbande explained that this action has become necessary to ensure Chairman Wontumi does not evade justice for his alleged environmental crimes. He emphasized that he is determined to hold Wontumi accountable for his role in mining activities that have polluted water bodies and caused extensive forest degradation across multiple regions.

Speaking on Cup of Tea, a Kumasi-based radio program, the NDC Deputy National Secretary revealed that he is personally on the ground in the Ashanti Region, coordinating with law enforcement authorities to effect Wontumi’s arrest.

“I have laid an ambush, but I can’t find Wontumi. I am personally in town looking for him. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the NPP Regional Chairman should inform me. I am not searching for him alone—I am working with the police to bring him to justice,” he stated.

When questioned about his personal involvement in the matter, Mr. Gbande clarified, “Do I arrest people? No. I am working alongside the police, the appropriate law enforcement agency. Chairman Wontumi will be arrested. Let him go to heaven and come back; he will be picked up.”

He further reiterated his commitment to addressing the environmental damage caused by Wontumi’s alleged activities. “I promised the people of the Ashanti Region that after the elections, we would arrest him. I am here fulfilling that promise. Wontumi will compensate the Ashanti, Central, and Western Regions for land degradation, water pollution, and environmental destruction. We will auction his machines and sell his properties, including his house, to compensate Ghanaians. This is a man who publicly displayed gold—now, we will inspect his mining sites to determine whether he undertook proper reclamation,” Mr. Gbande stated.

Expressing disappointment over the support Wontumi continues to receive, including from traditional leaders, Mr. Gbande remarked, “I am shocked that people, including chiefs, continue to praise him despite the destruction he has caused to the environment. We will arrest him, and if the NPP fails to remove such a character as their Regional Chairman, it will only tarnish the image of the Ashanti Region. We will pick Wontumi up like a hen.”
