Majority Member Mahama Ayariga has emphasized the need for discipline in Parliament following the recent chaos that disrupted proceedings.
He stated that while suspensions were necessary to maintain order, the focus should be on fostering a culture of discipline rather than punishment.
“If anybody engages in disorderly conduct, we will cite them for contempt of the house and take action,” he asserted Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show monitored by MyNewsGH.
However, he added that those who show remorse and commit to better conduct should be allowed to return and contribute to legislative work.
Reflecting on the disturbances, Ayariga pointed out that miscommunication played a key role in the altercation.
He explained that while one side believed only a few nominations would be addressed, the other expected a larger number to be handled, leading to confusion and eventual chaos.
Ayariga stressed the importance of communication and mutual understanding between both sides to prevent future disruptions.
He also confirmed that a committee has been set up to investigate the matter, including identifying those responsible for destroying parliamentary property.
“There’s an outstanding matter that needs to be resolved—who pays for the table that was broken?” he remarked.
Despite the turmoil, Ayariga expressed hope that Parliament could restore its image by learning from the incident and implementing measures to prevent future misconduct.
