Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Kingsley Agyemang, has paid glowing tribute to Dr. Joseph Kwame Danquah, popularly known as J.B. Danquah, as Ghana commemorates the 60th anniversary of his passing.
“Today, we honour a man whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our nation’s political, intellectual, and cultural heritage,” Agyemang stated in Parliament.
He highlighted Danquah’s relentless dedication to public service, recalling how, upon his return home, he immersed himself in national affairs, founding The Times of West Africa, which became a platform for championing political reform and intellectual discourse.
“In 1934, as Secretary of a delegation to the Colonial Office, he boldly opposed the Sedition Bill and advocated for constitutional reforms,” Agyemang noted.
He further emphasized Danquah’s extensive research into the Gold Coast’s history, tracing its connection to the ancient Ghana Empire, which influenced the country’s eventual adoption of the name Ghana.
Reflecting on Danquah’s tragic demise, Agyemang stated, “On February 4, 1965, he passed away under harrowing circumstances at Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
His death remains a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who sought freedom, justice, and national dignity.”
The MP also underscored Danquah’s political philosophy, which called for a mature democracy where the opposition is seen as a vital contributor rather than an adversary.
“This principle of constructive engagement remains particularly pertinent as we strive to elevate political dialogue to one of respect, reason, collaboration, and mutual understanding,” he said.
