Respected Journalist and Social Commentator Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has questioned the rationale for the demand by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a forensic audit of the Voters’ Register three months before the General Elections, wondering what specific challenges the NDC has identified with the register to warrant a forensic audit.
Mr Baako is of the view that the publication of the specifics of what the audit will entail will bring clarity to the matter, otherwise, the current position of the NDC is akin to oversimplification and absurd intellectualism.
He is unsure how effective prescription after the audit will be given the limited time available before the conduct of the 2024 General Elections.
He wrote: “Specificity! What are the scope and coverage of the INDEPENDENT FORENSIC AUDIT being demanded by the NDC? Have they made PUBLIC the full complement of the SPECIFICS of their case for that demand? The issue of whether or not, an AUDIT, forensic or otherwise, is needed now, cannot be reduced to an academic or intellectual exercise. That’s an exercise in over-simplification and absurd intellectualism which amuses me!
We’re dealing with realpolitik and statecraft.
Does it make sense to embark on a certain FORENSIC AUDIT by an entity 3 months before an Election?
How pragmatic and realistic would that prescription be? And in any case, I ask again, what are the SPECIFICS; not GENERALIZATIONS, which inform the call or need for an INDEPENDENT FORENSIC AUDIT of Ghana’s Register of Voters NOW?!!
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said that, among others, it has identified illegal transfers of voters and bloating of the register and are demanding for an independent forensic audit to restore trust and credibility to the electoral roll. The party will stage a nationwide demonstration in demand for the audit tomorrow.
But for Mr Baako, there is the need for specificity.
