President Nana Akufo-Addo has praised traditional and religious leaders, as well as the security apparatus in the Upper East Region, for their efforts in keeping Ghana free from the disturbances that have characterised Ghana’s neighbors and other countries within the Sahel.
Countries such as Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali, and Niger have experienced disturbances due to the activities of religious extremists and terrorists. However, Ghana has not faced the same level of unrest as these nations.
According to the president, this is due to the strong collaboration and efforts made by both state and non-state actors.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement in Bolgatanga, in the Upper East Region, on Tuesday (1 October 2024), Akufo-Addo said, “So far, our country has escaped the problems that have taken place in other countries.”
“It is because of the cooperation and partnerships that have been formed between the government, security agencies, and the chiefs and people of the Upper East Region. That is what has enabled the Upper East Region, and thereby Ghana, to remain a peaceful place,” he said.
Addressing the longstanding chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, the president stated, “By and large, we are getting on top of the situation in Bawku.”
He continued, “Even though he is not here, I would like to thank the Bawku Naba, particularly for the contribution he has made toward the peace and security of Bawku and, by extension, the security of the Upper East Region.”
The president also mentioned that during his recent international trips, he was frequently asked by various international observers about the secret strategies Ghana has employed to maintain its peace.
“There is no secret. The secret lies in the good sense of the Ghanaian people—the determination of our people to live in peace.”
The president held a two-hour stakeholder engagement to express his gratitude to the people of the Upper East Region for their continued support during his tenure.
He also provided an account of his stewardship while encouraging the people of the region to favourably consider Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 7 December polls.
Additionally, he urged the people to vote massively for NPP candidates in the parliamentary elections. Currently, the NPP holds only one seat in the region, a situation the party aims to change. The Binduri seat is held by Abdulai Abanga for the NPP.
The stakeholder engagement brought together chiefs, religious leaders, party heads, departmental heads, and youth groups from across the region.
