A group of university lecturers who have declared their intention to protect the Free Senior High School program with their advocacy have called on the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin in Effutu.
The group, identified as University Lecturers for Free SHS, paid a courtesy call on the Effutu Member of Parliament before commencing their sensitization program in some selected constituencies in the Central Region.
Not only did they seek the blessings of the Leader of Government’s Business in Parliament but also held talks with him on what their activities in the region entail. The leader of the group, Professor Isaac Boadi, underscored the rationale behind the sensitization programme.
“The Free SHS policy is very critical as it is important for Ghana’s human resource development. It has been successful so far, but we believe if care is not taken and it goes into wrong hands, it will collapse, and this will affect millions of Ghanaian children who are yet to be enrolled in schools under the Free SHS program” he indicated.
“To put it simply, Free SHS needs protection, and the best way to do so is to ensure the continuity of the NPP in power as we head for the polls on 7th December. The NDC, and especially, their presidential candidate, has given us ample evidence pointing to the fact that should he win the 2024 elections, the Free SHS would be extinct. We cannot allow that to happen” he explained further.
On his part, Honourable Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed his delight and appreciation to the team for the initiative and encouraged them to do their utmost best to help sell the Free SHS idea to the electorate and why there is the need to vote for the NPP to ensure that the program never suffers from collapse.
“I must commend you for taking up this all-important task to let our electorate know how important it is for them to vote for the NPP to keep Free SHS from getting into the wrong hands which would ultimately lead to its collapse. The Central Region, and of course, the other beneficiary regions are exceedingly grateful to you for this exercise”
In another development, some of the team’s members paid a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister and the regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party.
Discussions held centered on the mode of the sensitization exercise in the selected constituencies. In the Upper East, the team visited the regional Organizer and held similar discussions with him.
The sensitization exercises to enlighten the electorate in the afore-mentioned regions and selected constituencies are expected to last for one week. The team comprises professors, doctors and lecturers drawn from all the public universities in the country.
