Unidentified youth attack Wenchi police station, vandalise property, free inmates

A group of unidentified irate youth on Tuesday (10 December 2024) launched an attack on the Wenchi Police Station, vandalising property and freeing eight inmates.

According to sources at the Wenchi Police Station, the incident began when the Municipal Police Commander, DSP Nana Boakye Yiadom, attempted to arrest a man in Tohaba, a suburb of Wenchi in the Bono Region.

Upon arriving at the suspect’s home, according to the source, the commander discovered that the suspect was not present but proceeded to arrest his pregnant wife, taking her to the station.

In retaliation, a group of angry youth arrived at the police station to demand her release. When the youth confronted the commander, DSP Yiadom allegedly fired his weapon in an attempt to control the situation.

However, the youth managed to seize the gun from him.

The group then proceeded to vandalise several areas of the station, damaging the commander’s vehicle, the charge office, a flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, a computer and its accessories, as well as sliding doors and other property. Additionally, the attackers broke open the cells and freed eight individuals, including one convict, two remand prisoners, and five suspects.

The police commander has been admitted to the Bono Regional Hospital for treatment. As of now, the motive behind the initial arrest remains unclear.
