Sylevester Tetteh: Minority’s stance on Ghana’s shared 5G infrastructure project laughable

The Minority in Parliament lacks the requisite knowledge about Ghana’s shared 5G infrastructure, the deputy minister of information and vice chairman of Parliament’s committee on communications, Sylvester Tetteh has said.

The government last week announced its partnership with seven industry players on a new shared infrastructure to deliver affordable 5G mobile broadband services across Ghana.

The seven partners are Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, and Tech Mahindra and two telcos – AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.

The partners have established the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC), which has been awarded a 5G license and is expected to launch 5G services across Ghana within the next six months, followed by expansion to other parts of Africa.

The company will be the first 5G Mobile Broadband Shared Infrastructure Entity to build a nationwide 4G/5G network. It will also work with the telcos to launch affordable 4G/5G-enabled FWA CPEs and smartphones in Ghana within this calendar year.

However, the Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about the legality of the 5G deal awarded to Next Gen Infraco by the government.

According to the Minority, the transaction was being finalised without the knowledge or approval of Parliament.

However, reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (4 June), Tetteh described the Minority’s position as laughable adding that government must rather be commended for taking such a strategic decision.

“Indeed, I read the Minority press statement yesterday, it is nothing but laughable. It is coming from men with no integrity. I think that they lack a basic understanding of the industry.

“One would have expected that they had industry experts who had led the Ministry before and I think that their position is quite untenable,”

“This is a deal that Ghanaians should stand up and celebrate the president and the Minister for Communication for a bold decision in the face of all the crisis we are going through,” Tetteh said.
