This week has been a whirlwind of sporting drama, with historic feats, disappointing exits and moments that will be replayed for years.
From Oleksandr Usyk and Manchester City making history to the Black Starlets impressive start to the WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations, here is a roundup of the most captivating sports storylines of the week:
Heavyweight History: Usyk claims undisputed crown in epic fight
Oleksandr Usyk cemented his place in boxing’s hall of fame on Saturday night (18 May), defeating Tyson Fury in a dramatic split-decision victory to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era (established in 2007).
The Ukrainian southpaw (22-0, 14 KOs) dethroned “The Gypsy King” (34-1, 24 KOs) at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, handing Fury his first professional loss after 16 years. Usyk now joins the ranks of legendary undisputed champions like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, and Muhammad Ali.
This victory also marks another historic moment, with Usyk becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis’ reign in November 1999.
Manchester City seal historic fourth EPL title in a row
Manchester City secured an unprecedented fourth consecutive English Premier League (EPL) title on a thrilling final day of the season against West Ham United (18 May). Pep Guardiola’s men secured the trophy with a convincing 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.
A brace from Phil Foden, the English international and EA Sports Player of the Season, alongside a goal from Rodri, sealed the win for City. Despite a spectacular overhead kick by Ghanaian star Mohammed Kudus for West Ham, City dominated the match.
Next up for the Citizens is the FA Cup Final against local rivals Manchester United on Saturday (25 May) at Wembley Stadium, offering them a chance to complete a domestic double.
Black Starlets crush Côte d’Ivoire in WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup opener
Ghana’s U-17 national team, the Black Starlets, began their WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations campaign with a resounding 5-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday (15 May).
Coached by former Black Stars player Laryea Kingston, the Starlets took control early on with goals from Joseph Narbi and Godfred Sarpong. Although Côte d’Ivoire threatened a comeback, Ghana maintained their dominance with goals from Harve Gbafa and substitute Mark Kagawa Mensah.
The Black Starlets have now set their sights on Benin in their next match on Tuesday (21 May) at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Black Loopers’ Olympic dream ends at African qualifiers
Ghana’s table tennis team, the Black Loopers, were unable to secure their dream of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The team, consisting of Israel Aklie and Emmanuel Commey (men’s singles), Cynthia Kwabi and Joanita Borteye (women’s singles), fell short in the early stages of the ITTF Africa Olympic qualification tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.
While Kwabi and Borteye reached the knockout stages, they were ultimately eliminated, ending Ghana’s hopes of sending a table tennis representative to the Paris Olympics.
Brazil to host 2027 Women’s World Cup tournament
Brazil was named the official host of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Friday (17 May). This marks the first time a South American nation will host the prestigious tournament.
Brazil’s bid received overwhelming support, earning 119 votes from member associations of the FIFA Congress, compared to 78 votes for the joint bid from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
The FIFA technical evaluation played a key role in the decision, awarding Brazil a score of four out of five for its infrastructure and commercial viability, compared to 3.7 for the European bid.
