Ghana’s 23-man squad announced for September AFCON Qualifiers
Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, are gearing up for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, with head coach Otto Addo unveiling a 23-man squad.
The team is set to face Angola on Thursday (5 September) at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Sports Stadium, followed by a clash with Niger at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco on Monday (9 September).
Addo’s squad sees five changes from the team that triumphed in the June 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, as the Black Stars aim to secure their spot in the next AFCON tournament.
GFA to challenge betting companies over unauthorised use of matches
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is preparing to take legal action against betting companies that have listed Ghana Premier League matches without proper authorisation.
GFA President Kurt Okraku, speaking at the association’s 30th Ordinary Congress on Tuesday (27 August), announced that the GFA’s legal team would be pursuing these companies to protect the integrity of the league.
The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, set to kick off on 6 September, has been plagued by match-fixing allegations, and the GFA is determined to tackle the issue head-on.
Ghanaian wonderkid David Oduro signs for FC Barcelona
Ghanaian teenager David Oduro has joined Spanish giants FC Barcelona from Accra Lions.
The 18-year-old left-back who impressed during a trial with LaLiga giant’s youth teams will be joining Barcelona’s B team, FC Barcelona Atlètic, on a three-year deal.
Oduro has been a standout player for Accra Lions, featuring in 15 of the 17 games in the ongoing 2023/24 league season and scoring a crucial goal in a 1-1 draw against Bibiani Gold Stars.
Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah open to representing Ghana
Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has expressed his willingness to represent Ghana at the international level.
The 25-year-old, who was born in Lewisham, England, to Ghanaian parents, has previously played for England’s youth teams and made his senior debut for the Three Lions in a friendly against Australia in October 2023.
Nketiah’s potential switch to the Black Stars would be a significant boost for Ghana’s attacking options.
Disappointment for Ghana at the Paris Paralympics
Ghana’s participation in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games began on a sour note as paracyclist Fredrick Assor finished last in the Men’s B 4000m Individual Pursuit qualifying round.
Competing at the Vélodrome National in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France, Assor recorded a time of 6:30.071, placing him 16th overall and missing out on qualification for the medal rounds.
Despite Assor’s setback, Ghanaian para-athlete Zinabu Issah would advance to the final of the women’s discus throw (F57) at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, finishing in third place in the qualifying round on Friday (30 August) at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
