South African singer Tyla secures 3 awards at 30th MTV Europe Music Awards

South African singer Tyla made a triumphant sweep at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) on Sunday, securing titles for Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best R&B.

The event, held on 10 November at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, celebrated Tyla’s achievements as she stood out among prominent nominees.

Tyla’s win was historic, as she became the first African artist to claim three awards in a single night at the EMAs: Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best R&B. This achievement underscores her versatility and the growing recognition of African music on international platforms.

Tyla outperformed a strong lineup of competitors, including Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, Diamond Platnumz, and TitoM & Yuppe, showcasing her influence in the African and global music scenes as well as her rapid rise as one of Africa’s brightest and young musical stars.

In her acceptance speech for the Best Afrobeats award, Tyla expressed gratitude to those who supported her journey.

“I want to thank my team, my family, and the tigers for voting for me… Thank you to Afrobeats. Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music. So, thank you so much to Afrobeats,” she said, acknowledging the role of the genre in her success and its impact on African music’s global reach.

This follows her victory at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), where she showcased her roots in Amapiano—a South African genre—through her hit song “Water,” which also incorporates Afrobeats influences.

At both the VMAs and EMAs, Tyla outshone Nigerian heavyweights like Asake, Rema, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Tems, reinforcing her position as a force to be reckoned with in the Afrobeats and African music industry.
